Risheswor Mahila Allo Kapada Utpadan Udyog is a women-led enterprise of Tamang women who turn Allo, the Himalayan nettle, into yarn, fabric, and handcrafted goods. Founded around 2008, it carries an indigenous craft forward, one thread at a time.
Allo grows wild in the Himalayan hills, and for generations the Tamang community has known how to turn it into cloth. Risheswor Mahila Allo Kapada Utpadan Udyog was founded in 2065 B.S. (around 2008) by Tamang women who wanted that knowledge to become a livelihood and not just a memory.
They began with the plant itself, gathering Allo fiber by hand and spinning it into raw yarn. It was slow work, but it was theirs. Around 2010 (2067 B.S.), the group moved into weaving and began carrying their fabric to local and regional buyers.
Their craft did not stay still. After years of working with fabric, in 2025 (2082 B.S.) the women began making finished goods, including bags, slippers, and other handicrafts. In these, the nettle fiber takes on a new life while keeping its roots.
The path has been hard. Without a permanent shop or steady buyers, the women depend on trade fairs, seasonal exhibitions, and visitors who come to their office. Gathering and carrying the raw Allo plants takes great effort. Over time the group has shrunk from 15 members to 8. Those eight keep the looms working and the tradition alive, and they have the skill and the capacity to grow as soon as the market reaches them.
